Local Phone Manufacturing Declined Significantly in 2022

According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, local manufacturing plants produced/assembled 21.94 million phones in calendar year 2022, an 11% decrease from 24.66 million in 2021. (PTA).

The drop was attributed to problems with imports due to limited letters of credit (LCs). In comparison, Pakistan imported 1.53 million handsets commercially during the same time period.

In December 2022, local plants produced/assembled 2.24 million handsets. Local plants produced/assembled 24.66 million handsets in calendar year 2021, up from 13.05 million in 2020, representing an 88% increase.

Commercial imports of mobile phone handsets were 10.26 million in 2021, down from 24.51 million in 2020.

The 21.94 million mobile phones produced locally included 13.15 million 2G handsets and 8.79 million smartphones.

Furthermore, according to PTA data, 56% of mobile devices in Pakistan are smartphones, while 44% are 2G.

Despite the increase in domestic production, Pakistan imported mobile phones worth $362.862 million during the first half of the current fiscal year 2022-23, a 66.73% decrease from $1.090 billion during the same period last year.

According to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), mobile phone imports increased 12.04% month on month (MoM) and stood at $72.291 million in December 2022, up from $64.520 million in November 2022.

Mobile phone imports decreased by 69.10% year on year (YoY) in December 2022, compared to $233.917 million in the same month the previous year.

Overall telecom imports into the country totaled $565.896 million during the first half of the current fiscal year 2022-23, representing a 60.24% decrease from $1.423 billion during the same period the previous fiscal year.

However, overall telecom imports fell by 62.43% year on year, to $110.165 million in December 2021, from $293.193 million in December 2021.

Overall telecom imports increased by 0.03% in December 2022 when compared to $110.136 million in November 2022.

Other apparatus imports totaled $203.035 million from July to December 2022, representing a 38.97% decrease from the previous fiscal year’s $323.656 million.

Other apparatus remained at $37.874 million in December 2022, representing 36.11% negative growth when compared to $59.276 million in December 2021 and 16.97% negative growth on a month-to-month basis when compared to $45.616 million in November 2022.
