Imported Mobile Phones Set to Get a Lot More Expensive Under Proposed GST

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has proposed significantly raising the sales tax on mobile phone imports.

Through the Finance (Supplemental) Bill, 2023, the FBR proposed changes to the Ninth Schedule (mobile phones) of the Sales Tax Act of 1990.
The proposed bill would levy a 25% sales tax on high-end mobile phones with an import value greater than $500.

The sales tax on mobile phone imports valued between $200 and $500 would be raised from 17 to 18 percent. It is worth noting that there are two separate categories in this range under the Ninth Schedule, namely $200-350 and $350-500.

The rate of sales tax on mobile phone imports up to $200 would remain unchanged.
